We are going to MALAWI!

I have some exciting news to share with you! We are going to Malawi, Africa!

I started Wallflower Design Company, almost three years ago. As my company was gaining momentum and exposure on social media, a non-profit organization called Market Colors found and contacted me. Market Colors collaborates with craftsmen in Africa to create products that will sell throughout the world. They exist to equip African men and women with a sustainable in come, generated through the sale of their products.

“God called me to this type of ministry over several visits to Africa. I spent days with widows anxious over whether they could give their kids food that day because they hadn’t sold many of their handmade products at the market. I don’t say that to pull at your heartstrings, but because it’s the truth. Together, we can change that -- not for everyone in Africa, but for many.” - Lizzie Randazzo, CEO of Market Colors

In this email, Lizzie and Robyn (sales coordinator) had an idea. They wanted to sell phone cases with the craftsmens’ designs on them.  We worked out a deal - they bought cases that we made to sell on their website (marketcolors.org) and we continued to make and donate proceeds to Market Colors. Over the past 2 and a half years, both Wallflower Design Co. and Market Colors have grown significantly. It has been a blessing to work so closely with such a wonderful organization. I am so happy to be able to call them friends.

A month or so ago, I received an email from Lizzie who felt it was on her heart to ask if I was interested in going on their next trip to Africa to design new products and teach new trades to craftsmen. She asked for my expertise in pattern making and design for this trip and for future MC products  I am currently sketching out patterns and learning about dyeing to design one-of-a kind products for the craftsmen to learn and make.

This is the exciting part! We are specifically working with widows. In this country, when children lose one parent, they often become an orphan. If the widows are able to receive a sustainable income, they will be able to keep their family together. This is also a faith-based mission so we are able to spread the Gospel with these women and their families. With the sale of these products, many lives can be changed. In 1 James 2:27, God calls us to reach out to widows and orphans.

You may know that Sarah Calvetti (@imsarahbee) is coming along on this trip as well! She has been a part-time assistant to me for a few months now and a wonderful friend. Market Colors is located in Orlando, Florida. Lizzie & I actually have never met in person! (Thank goodness for many skype calls, emails and text messages!). Having Sarah there will be a wonderful addition to the group that is going & it will be great to have each other to travel with.

We will depart for the 10 day trip on March 7th at 6am from Orlando and make the 24 hour journey to Malawi. We will be staying in a safe little compound about minutes from the city of Lilongwe. In this compound, there are schools, churches and huts. The huts have a few bunk-beds with running water & electricity.

Thank you so much for your willingness to be a part of this trip and the larger mission of Market Colors. I can’t wait to share the stories of this incredible adventure with you! Feel free to check out our website www.marketcolors.org to find out more about this organization that I strongly believe in.'
